The Black Entertainment Television or the BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports and other fields of entertainment over the past year. In this prestigious event, the awards are being presented annually and they are broadcasted live in BET itself.
This year’s 2011 BET Awards was really emotional when a mother paid tribute to her daughter who once contributed a lot to the music industry but unexpectedly died earlier this year. And I am referring to the late Whitney Houston.
The later superstar’s mother, Cissy, provided the emotional highlight of Sunday’s ceremony as she sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in tribute to her later daughter, leaving the audience members like Beynce and Soulja Boy in tears. The entire audience became really emotional as Cissy started to drop a tear as well. Some of the great artists who attended the said event are Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce and Samuel L. Jackson, but probably the highlight of the event was the time when Cissy sung. We can say that with all the star power at the BET Awards, the most rousing moment came not from a superstar, but from the mother of one.
It was Mariah Carey who opened the tribute and she even stammered and her voice wavered as she told stories about Houston. She even reminisced the time when she last saw Houston last year and how the two laughed and gossiped together. “I miss my friend,” Carey said. “I miss hearing her voice and laughter.”
However, the show must go on so they still continued with the announcement of winners.
