The recently released movie “The Hunger Games” claimed the no. 3 ranking in the blockbuster spot as it reached a $152.5 million debut for this weekend alone. The fantasy action adventure romantic movie starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson almost got the top spot in the blockbuster list because of their earnings for this week domestically, the third-best revenue haul ever.
That final figure released on Monday was about $2.5 million less than the distributor Lionsgate estimated a day earlier. But still, they said that it was by far the best debut ever for a film released outside of the busy summer or holiday seasons and a record opening for a non-sequel.
Hunger Games is actually based on a trilogy book written by Suzanne Collins. It is one of the bestselling books and it is just the first one of the three books. The film, on the other hand, was directed by Gary Ross. This action drama science fiction film features a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl who are forced to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to death game televised on national television and being watched by all people.
Going back, the film trails only the $169.2 million opening for last year’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and the 158.4 million debut of 2008’s “Batman Begins” which is a sequel to “the Dark Knight.” However, they expect that the earnings of the movie Hunger Games will still increase in the coming weeks.
